The Need for Lifelong Support

A Home for All

Established in November 2001, Hurdy Gurdy House was founded to address the critical shortage of residential facilities for individuals with learning disabilities, particularly for adults with autism and challenging behavior.

Leanne Scott, the parent of a child with autism, and Richard Gaertner recognized this need and took action to create a space where adults with Autism could receive the care and support they deserve.

“The greatest gift is not being afraid to question.”

The Need for Lifelong Support

The Need for Lifelong Support

Current policies in state health and social services focus on de-institutionalizing individuals, except for those requiring hospitalization due to illness.

While this policy may be well-intentioned, it does not adequately address the unique, lifelong needs of individuals with autism.

Autism is a condition that may require specialized, long-term support and infrastructure to create an environment where individuals with autism can live with dignity and enjoy a high quality of life.

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

What Does the Spectrum Mean?

Autism is called a “spectrum” because it includes a wide range of characteristics and behaviors that vary from one person to another.

No two individuals with autism are alike; some may have exceptional abilities in certain areas, while others may struggle with everyday tasks.

Understanding that autism affects each individual differently is key to offering the right support and care.

Some individuals may be non-verbal but highly intelligent, while others may communicate verbally but struggle to interpret social cues.

The spectrum ranges from mild to severe, with individuals requiring varying levels of support throughout their lives.
